Single Flap Door Mount

Step 1 Prep Your Door

  • If you have not yet measured your pet, watch this video to ensure the pet door will work.
  • If possible, remove the door from its hinges using a screwdriver and hammer to tap out the hinge pins. Lay the door flap for installation. Tape the provided template to the door. The top edge of the cut-out line should be at least 3” (7,6 cm) above the pet's shoulders.
  • Be careful not to cut too close to the bottom of the door as you may reduce the door's strength. Level the top edge of the cut-out line.

Step 2 Drill the Holes

  • Once you are certain the pet door will work with your door, make sure the template is level, and mark the outline with a pencil. Remove the template and drill holes through the corners just inside of the lines using a ⅜” (9,5 mm) drill bit.
  • Make sure your drill is kept level and drills all the way through the door.

Step 3 Saw An Opening

  • Using a jigsaw, cut along the marked lines, making sure to cut straight.
  • We recommend applying masking tape along the outside of the lines to protect your door from scratch marks as you cut with the jigsaw.

Step 4 Check Weatherstripping

  • Ensure the weatherstripping is firmly pressed in the groove on both frames. Weatherstripping indicated in red.

Step 5 Position the Frames

  • Place the trim frame on the outside of the door and the flap frame on the inside.

Step 6 Position Screws

  • Select appropriate screws and insert them into the pet door from the inside.
  • Do not fully tighten screws until all four screws are inserted and the pet door is leveled.
  • Use the included installation magnet to help align the screws.

Door Thickness Screw Length
1-⅜” (3.5 cm) Short Screws (1-¾”)
1-¾” (4.4 cm) Long Screws (2-¼”)

Step 7 Screw Door Into Place

  • Once the pet door is leveled, tighten the screws so that the weatherstripping compresses.
  • Do not overtighten.

Step 8 Attach Screw Covers

  • Push the four screw covers in by hand to cover the screws.

Step 9 Seal With Silicone

  • Apply silicone where the two frames meet. Also apply silicone where the outside frame meets the door.

Step 4 Place Sill Plate

  • Rest sill plate at the bottom of the cutout with the weather stripping facing up and the outer leg on the outside of the door.

Step 5 Caulk U Shape Tunnel

  • Apply caulking to seal the tunnel to the inside frame on the 3 sides of the U shaped metal tunnel.

Step 6 Check Weatherstripping

  • Ensure the weatherstripping is firmly pressed in the groove on both frames. Weatherstripping ends on the side for the inside frame, while the outside frame has an open area at the bottom to allow water to flow outside down the sill plate. Weatherstripping is indicated in red.

Step 7 Position the Frames

  • Place the inside frame with the tunnel on the inside of the door just resting on top of the sill plate weatherstripping. Take the exterior frame and place it on the outside of the door fitting inside the tunnel.

Step 8 Position Screws

  • Select appropriate screws and insert them into the pet door from the inside.

PANELED DOORS

The best way to install the pet door is to have it straddle the recessed area of one of the panels. Have the pet door sit on the flat area in the middle, side, and below the recessed panel. The frame will cross the recessed area on the top, so you will be left with a gap. The easiest way to fill this gap is to get battens or shims from a local hardware store, and cut them to fit. When that gap is mostly filled, caulk the remaining areas to seal the doggy door to the surface of the people door. If the space is very irregular you can also use a squishy foam weather stripping, which will compress down for a tight fit. When finished, use caulking to seal the door.

FAQ

Which doggie door flap size should I get?

Don't know which size to get? Here is a measurement guide to help you out.

I want to get the large pet door for my dog, but I am concerned about a person fitting through it.

All Endura Flap Pet Door models come with a locking cover. This cover can be used to keep you doggy in. It also can be used to keep intruders from entering your home. It is made from a special polymer that is as strong as 1⁄16" sheet of steel. The door only comes with one locking cover, but you can purchase an additional one for the other side as long as you have purchased the double flap door mount.Security consultants agree that dogs are a good burglar deterrent, especially one that barks. If you want to leave your pet door open make sure the gate to access your yard is locked and you post a Beware of Dog sign.

Can a large dog & cat use the same double flap door?

Our doors have a strong magnetic seal which may be too strong for a cat. However, if you have cats and dogs sharing a door, you can decrease the magnetic resistance of the threshold on large and extra large sizes making it easier for a cat to use. For small or medium pet doors you can also offset the magnets on the Endura once flap has been installed.

I have a small and large dog sharing this door. Will my small dog be able to open the flaps on the extra large double flap dog door?

It depends on the tenacity of your small dog. You can decrease the magnetic resistance of the threshold on large and extra large sizes making it easier for your small dog to use. You will also want to make sure the door is mounted low enough for the small dog to walk through and high enough to clear the large dog's back.

How do I know what size is best for my dog?

When installing the pet door you want it to clear the top of your dog's back by 1-2 inches, minimum. You also want the step over to be comfortable. Lastly you want the width to allow your pet to go through without touching the sides. Here's a measurement guide with tips on how to determine the correct size.Make sure you get the right size for your pet. If you have a smaller dog or cat, you can check out doggy doors for small dogs that are better sized for them.

Are the panels/flaps flexible? Seems like it would trap a dog if it backed up.

The Endura Flap is slightly more rigid than other economy style flaps, but it is a safe, soft, flexible flap. It remains flexible in temperatures as low as -40°F.

Is a single flap enough for winter weather?

A single Endura Flap is extremely energy-efficient and capable of withstanding winds up to 50 mph. It is the only door which allows you to increase the magnetic strength for increased wind resistance. It is recommended for timid pets. The double flap increases the energy-efficiency further.

Does the door sound very loud when the dog goes in or out?

When the flap gets to its resting place there is a snapping sound when the magnets employ. This sound let's you know the door is doing its job sealing out the elements and keeping your heated or cooled air inside.

I do not have to contend with wind or rain, if I buy the single flap version of the wall dog door is it possible to add the second flap in the future?

It is possible, but it not simple and can be quite costly. You will need to purchase a new inner or outer frame with the flap as single flap and double flap frames are built differently.

What side does the locking cover slide in?

All locking covers slide in from the top. If you purchase a double flap model, the locking cover can be used on the inside or outside frame. If you purchase a single flap, the locking cover is on the interior frame.

Other brands of pet doors with plastic flaps always warp and thus let in air. How do these flaps hold up over time?

The Endura Flap is made with a special polymer called polyolefin. It remains safe, soft and flexible in temperatures as low as -40°F. It does not yellow nor harden in the sun. The patented magnetic design ensures the door door seals well for years. In fact, the pet door and flap are backed by a Lifetime warranty. To contact Endura Flap for door warranty email a photo to our customer service team, and we can take a look and let you know.

Are replacement flaps available?

Yes, you can buy replacement flaps on EnduraFlap.com.

Are there color options other than white?

Yes, they are available in Tan and very Dark Bronze.

I have a dog that I want to let out, but I want to prevent our cats from using it. Can the door be weighted to keep them from using it?

You can increase the magnetic strength of the door with purchasing additional magnets on EnduraFlap.com.

I have a concrete block wall. I believe the block itself is 8" so adding the furring strip, drywall and stucco it is 10-11". Will this door fit?

For all installation locations more than 2-1/4" thick, you will need the wall mount version.

Does this door seal tightly against the frame so air and mosquitoes can't pass through. If so, does the guarantee cover that lasting, as well?

The double flap door mounts come with a tube of silicone that can be used to seal the edges around the frame. NOTE: single flap door mounts do NOT come with silicone. The warranty does not cover any accidents or damage made by improper installation.

Why is there a difference in pet door flap size for the single versus the double flap models?

Since each flap is dual walled making them 7⁄8" thick as the pet pushes through the first flap will actually hit the second flap. This makes it so that there is a loss of about 1" of space a the top of the endura double flap pet doors as they enter or exit.

Is this a good dog door for garage door installations?

You can install this in pretty much any door application, however most doors from the house to the garage have a fire rating so you need to check your local code to see it installing it is allowed.

My door is 1 3⁄4" thick. Should I buy an Endura Flap Pet Doors double or Endura Flap Pet Doors single flap?

You can order either. The double flap installs in doors 1-3/4" to 2-1/4" thick and the single flap installs in doors 1-1/8" to 1-3/4" thick.

On the Endura Flap Size Chart I see two different heights for each size, why?

The actual flap size is the same, but with the double flap model, when the two flaps reach 90° they touch and reduce the height of the opening for the pet.

What double flap pet doors should I look at if I'm looking for a long-lasting, insulated dog door?

The Endura Door for Doors are available in two models. Double Flap for the most extreme climates or Single Flap for most US climates. Both are very energy-efficient and backed by a lifetime warranty. The Endura Flap Pet Door is the most insulated dog door on the market.

Can I install this door into a window?

You can, but you will need a windo panel insert like the Endura Flap Thermo Sash 3e Pet Doors for Sash Windows.

Can I install the Endura Flap pet door directly into glass?

No, but you can get a pane of glass with the Endura Flap built directly into it that you can then install into your sliding glass door.

  • We recommend applying masking tape along the outside of the lines to protect your door from scratch marks as you cut with the jigsaw.

  • Do not fully tighten screws until all four screws are inserted and the pet door is leveled.
  • Use the included installation magnet to help align the screws.

Door Thickness Screw Length
1-⅜” (3.5 cm) Short Screws (1-¾”)
1-¾” (4.4 cm) Long Screws (2-¼”)

Step 9 Screw Door Into Place

  • Once the pet door is leveled, tighten the screws so that the weatherstripping compresses.
  • Do not overtighten.

Step 10 Attach Screw Covers

  • Push the four screw covers in by hand to cover the screws.

Step11 Seal With Silicone

  • Apply silicone where the two frames meet. Also apply silicone where the outside frame meets the door.
